Design Work Beyond Imagination

Over the past year into this year, I’ve had the opportunity to work on design projects that I never imagined before.

While I can’t go into specifics, the designs I worked on are more akin to worms than lures in the realm of fishing tackle.

Although I’ve received requests for web design and development from black bass/sea bass lure manufacturers and hobby fishing enthusiasts in the past, I had never considered designing the baits themselves.

A bit about my fishing background: as a child, I fished for crucian carp and carp in nearby reservoirs, and as an adult during a fishing boom, I dabbled briefly in black bass fishing. However, I have minimal experience in sea fishing and am prone to seasickness. So, when it comes to the sea, I’m either swimming, taking photographs, or enjoying the twilight; I’m an amateur in terms of fishing.

The designed baits are for sea fishing, and the request came from the representative of a company in Kurashiki, Okayama, engaged in various businesses, including fishing-related work in the Seto Inland Sea.

As they’re bait designs, it’s not just about aesthetics; considering how the designed baits move underwater is crucial. Thus, it’s a project of designing, testing, and refining the baits’ performance.

Although I’ve been in web design and graphic design since 2001, most of my inquiries and projects were within the realm of web and design work I could imagine.

Perhaps this bait design venture is closer to product design than traditional graphic design, which might explain why it exceeded my expectations.

Reflecting on it, aside from natural elements, almost everything we use has a touch of design or has been influenced by it.

This suggests an infinite need for design across various domains.

Currently, I’ve designed several types of baits, and I’m relieved that they’re performing well.
